A Traditional Weaving Workshop in Essaouira & An Encounter with a Master
Step into an ancient workshop in the heart of Essaouira’s medina, where the rhythmic click-clack of the loom tells a story of lifelong devotion. Here, you will meet Mâalem Abderrahim, a master weaver with more than 55 years of experience. This is a rare opportunity to connect with an authentic Moroccan tradition and learn directly from a true artisan.
Two Ways to Experience the Art of Weaving
We offer two distinct ways to discover this ancestral craft, catering to your curiosity and available time.
1. Visit & Demonstration
Perfect for those with limited time, this 45-minute session is an immersion into the weaver’s world. Discover the traditional weaving process as Mâalem Abderrahim demonstrates his craft. Feel the textures, hear the stories behind the patterns, and understand the journey from simple thread to intricate textile. (Children under 5 are welcome to observe for free).
2. Hands-On Workshop: Weave Your Own Masterpiece
For a truly immersive experience, join the Mâalem at his loom. Feel the threads between your fingers as Abderrahim guides you through the traditional weaving process, helping you to create your own unique piece – using dyed cotton or wool from Marrakesh. Together, you will select the colors and design that speak to you, then bring it to life on the loom. This workshop is limited to a maximum of 4 people to ensure personalized attention. (Participants are welcome from 8 years old, children under 8 are welcome to join and observe the process for free.)
Whether you’re a beginner or have some weaving experience, Abderrahim will provide personalized instruction to ensure you leave with a beautifully crafted piece.
You can choose to create:
A Scarf or Bath Mat: A beautiful and functional piece, typically completed in a 4 to 7 hours session (depending on your skill level).
A Fouta: This traditional Moroccan towel requires more time, usually about 1.5 days (2 sessions of 4 to 6 hours).
A Cover or Flatweave Rug: A significant and personal creation, this project takes several days (3 to 4 sessions of 5 approximatively 5 hours) to complete.
Why This Weaving Experience is Uniquely “Unfiltered”
This is an authentic exchange, not a tourist show. You will learn from a master artisan in his real, working studio in the medina. You’ll gain a deep appreciation for the skill and patience required for this craft and leave with a one-of-a-kind piece that captures the essence of Moroccan weaving—a tangible memory of your time and effort.

On my last day in Essaouira I took this weaving class in the medina. Tarek met me on a corner and guided me to the small shop. It was a super special experience (I’m a first time weaver). Master weavers Abd Al Rahim (showcasing my finished shawl) and Muhammad (whom I worked with most at the loom) were super nice and fun to spend a day with. I got to choose my colors and bobbins were loaded using a bicycle wheel. Then upstairs where one has to crawl under the loom to get into the seat. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dusty! First I was shown how to throw the shuttle (I failed to catch it once and it almost hit the cat, who was totally unfazed), then after a while I asked to learn to operate the loom. Muhammed and I switched places and he showed me how to use the foot pedals and adjust the tension. Then we wove and wove and wove! I went for a random stripe. Tarek came by again to check on how things were going and help with some communication since he speaks fluent English. (Abd Al Rahim does understand English, and Muhammed communicates in French, but mine is very very rusty.) They were so nice and patient, and even shared their couscous lunch with me! The day finished with a shared mint tea and heartfelt thanks all around. I love having my shawl at home, it’s a great memory. I highly recommend weaving with Abd Al Rahim and Muhammed!
