
Goldsmithing - "Deg Souiri" Jewelry Workshop - Essaouira’s Traditional Technique
Said and Aziz are welcoming you in their workshop in Essaouira's medina to teach you their art. Said is a Berber Maallem (master) in the goldsmithing craft, hails from a family of goldsmiths and has practiced this art with dedication for over 40 years. Said belongs to the dwindling group of masters who still master the Moroccan craftsmanship in the traditional way. His expertise extends to the
unique and ancient technique known as “Deg Souiri”
, a form of filigree that is exceptionally delicate and detailed. The Deg Souiri is deeply intertwined with the history of Essaouira and represent its rich heritage, as a fusion of artistic influenced from different communities that have coexisted in this city (Jewish, Berbers, Andalusians...). In his workshop, Said has already taught apprentices from around the world, like Aziz who is now working there.

Choose the number of sessions you would like to do (≈ 2 hours/day), depends on y
our experience level
(beginner / already experimented in goldsmithing) and
how in-depth
you want the training to be. As a general guideline :
- Beginners: 1 session will be enough to learn generalities about this art, 3 sessions recommended to learn basic techniques yourself
- Experienced: 1-2 sessions may be sufficient to cover this new approach
