An Encounter with a Living UNESCO Heritage
Essaouira is the beating heart of Gnawa culture in Morocco, a city where mystical rhythms and soulful chants echo through the ancient medina walls. This spiritual art form, recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is more than just music; it’s a living tradition of healing, storytelling, and spiritual connection. We invite you to go beyond being a spectator and to step inside this sacred world for an intimate and personal initiation.
Meet Your Host: A Respected Gnawa Mâalem
Your host is a highly respected Gnawa Mâalem (Master), a carrier of the tradition passed down through generations. He will welcome you not as a student, but as a guest, ready to share insights into Gnawa culture, its deep spirituality, its meanings, and its history. In a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, he will introduce you to the Guembri, the three-stringed bass lute that is considered the heart of this musical tradition.
Your Experience: More Than a Lesson, a Connection
This is not a typical music lesson aimed at technical mastery. Instead, this session is a true initiation. The goal is for you to form a personal connection with the Guembri, to feel its deep, resonant vibrations, to grasp its fundamental rhythmic patterns, and to understand the spirituality woven into its melodies.
The Mâalem will guide you, helping you to hold the instrument, pluck its strings, and feel the pulse that has animated ceremonies for centuries. Whether you’re a complete novice or an experienced musician, you will discover an essential part of the Moroccan soul.
Why This Experience is Uniquely “Unfiltered”
This is a rare opportunity to learn directly from a master in a private, intimate setting. You will gain a deep understanding of the history and traditions surrounding Gnawa music, focusing on cultural immersion rather than just technique. By participating, you are directly supporting the preservation of an endangered and beautiful art form, ensuring its rhythms continue to resonate for future generations.
The Details of Your Musical Journey

It was a great musical experience to immerse oneself in Essaouria Gnaoua music. Talking to Tarek and the master, sharing a tea, learning about the music. Far from the typical tourist attractions, where one can understand the true Moroccan (Essaouira in this case) culture.
Thank you so much Cristina, we had a great time hosting you for this muscial moment !
